ALMT-FS: Hairstory

ALMT-Funday Sundays is a diversion from the rest of the week.

I’ve recently designed a new-and-improved Dirty Step Upstage poster with some of our festival laurels on it.  What do you think?

For those that haven’t been following my blog for long, that’s me in the poster. But that’s not my hair. In fact, under that wig my hair is a medium length dark blonde.  That was, until recently.

My first photoshoot 1998

Like many woman I know, I’ve been dying my hair since high school. It started when I was 17 and bleached my hair for a dance competition. After a couple of incredibly high maintenance years I tried to go back to my roots. Unfortunately, the packet of dye I purchased was not a dark blonde as its packaging suggested, but more of the strawberry variety. For the first time I had warmth in my hair and I loved it. I’ll try to dig out some photos from my first days of college experimentation (hair color experimentation!) and post it another time.

In 1999, armed with a photo of Nicole Kidman, I walked into a fancy salon in Brisbane and walked out a fiery redhead. It stayed that way for the next four years. I loved the way the red was such a stark contrast with my pale skin and how it made my eyes pop.

After the red came dark brown:

Still brown a year later:

And then the long journey back to blonde. Somewhere in the there came the chop.  THE CHOP. I’d always had long hair and I wanted a fresh start. Somehow I veered back toward red again:

Then I went REALLY Short and REALLY blonde (and pink).

As one might expect, I had a spiritual awakening of several sorts while in India. Once of which related to the overwhelming beauty of Indian women and how their hair was beautiful, long, thick and natural. So, it was time to go back to my roots.

Which meant dying my overprocessed, white ends to my dark roots. I used Clara Bow as an example in one instance:

Over the last two years, I’ve patiently grown out my hair to a shoulder-length bob:

And now, after painfully growing out my natural hair…I’ve gone back to red. It’s only a temporary color, but I have a feeling it might stick. We’ll see.

I’m afraid I don’t have too much to offer in terms of professional photos, so this will have to do.

Love the changing styles and the photo of you in India is incredible. I’m also very impressed by your obvious Rock Band talent :)
