A “Last Dance” tease
June 27th, 2010On Social Saturdays I write about Social Networking.
I’m super, super excited to present to you my, er…Girl In The Red Dress’s newest single “Last Dance”. It is derivative of the classic disco track from Donna Summer, but as I’m sure you’ll notice Girl got her hands dirty and fooled around with the melody until it became her own.
So, here you go…the teaser for the track. The song will be made available here at ALM Talkies online this coming Thursday, July 1. Just in time for your 4th of July celebrations…

June 9th, 2010On Women’s Wednesday I talk about women in media.
Did you just watch the video above? How far did you get? I forced myself to watch all of it – mostly out of curiousity – but I barely got 15 seconds through. Especially when I saw how long it was. Dear Ms. Gaga, does every video need to attempt to be an epic? My patience is wearing incredibly thin when it comes to your pretentious art and film references – and I’m a filmmaker!
Harsh? Well, I’m not alone. Let’s start with Jezabel: “Gaga’s New Video Makes Riot Gear and Latex Boring” who says:
It’s very beautiful! And very dull. Vivid religious iconography, leather coats, vague military/riot references and men in fishnets and heels can’t make up for a weak (non existent?) narrative and an incredibly repetitive song.
In “So Predictably Disrespectful” The Spectator states:
Being vulgar to shock the middle class is by now simply the last refuge of an empty mind; it’s not shocking at all. We expect disrespect from people like Lady Gaga. After all, we’d only be shocked if she sang something beautiful, inspirational, or possibly with more than ten words in the song.
Even Faith & Reason from USA Today agrees:
I can certainly understand how some people will be offended and I wouldn’t argue with them. And 25 years ago when videos were first doing things like this, it was shocking. But I think it’s just not a particularly compelling — or coherent — or shocking video.
Whether or not you agree, you can have your vote over at The Guardian, who is simply asking of the video – Masterpiece or Overrated? And while you are considering the options, they jog your memory:
-Masterpiece – espiecally the machine gun bra and Leather Nun homage
OR
-Overrated – Madonna’s done it all before, and the song sounds like Ace of Base
What do you think?

February 8th, 2010On ALMT-Music Mondays I write about music.
In my last post, I introduced you to The Hype Machine, an awesome site for checking out the latest, hottest, trendiest music on the blogosphere.
But what if you’re a musician that wants to be listed ON that awesome site?
It appears there are a few ways:1. Check out their source list for the top 100 sources and cold call them.
2. Do a little research on THM: find music similar to yours and hunt down the blogs that like your genre and send them your track.Either way you decide to go, you may want to consider putting your music on SoundCloud. Besides the fact that Wired claimed it was threatening MySpace for the “best online music destination,” it appears that THM is aggregated with SoundCloud (which means you’ll make it a whole lot easier for these kick ass blogs to smoothly integrate your band into their daily cool hunting).
An example below (I love how you can comment on specific parts of the song):
I have not yet set up an account for Girl In The Red Dress, but hope to do so soon. If you beat me to the punch, please let me know what you think and where to find your track. Best of luck getting on THM!
And don’t forget to check out tomorrow’s blog for your chance to win the debut EP from GITRD
and for a chance to win an iPad.

February 8th, 2010On ALMT-Music Mondays I write about music.
I feel like I discovered several goldmines today, so I’ll try to get through them as succinctly as possible.
First: Peter Gabriel rocks. Ok, I already knew this. But what I recently discovered is on 2/16 the man is putting out “Scratch My Back” an indie rock/orchestral cover album featuring such artists as David Bowie, Elbow, Talking Heads, Regina Spektor and Paul Simon. The artists in turn will cover a Gabriel song for the follow-up album “I’ll Scratch Yours.”
I downloaded his rendition of Arcade Fire’s “My Body Is a Cage” and if this is a taste of things to come, then I’m first in line to buy the album.
Next up: Where to listen to the latest finds from the top music blogs on the internet…all in one place?
