It’s your last chance to request Catwoman’s costume!

Double duty Fan Friday!
It’s that time again. Time to request your favorite Cat creation. Next Friday I will be selecting the third and final cat costume for my Catwoman Summer Project 2010.
So what will August look like? You tell me. All you need to do is “Like” the Catwoman Summer Project Facebook Page and then post pictures or comment on ones that are already there. Some people like to leave a list on the wall, that helps me out a lot. Or maybe join the discussion “Weigh in on the Catwoman #3 costume”.
This is your last chance to tell Catwoman what she should wear!

July 22nd, 2010On Women’s Wednesday I talk about women in media.
Have you seen Inception yet? It’s getting harder and harder to surf the web for those of you that haven’t, but fear not… Bitch Magazine has a feature for you: “Snarky’s Cinemachine: Five Non-Spoiler-y Things About Inception”. I found number 2 particularly interesting (and relevant) for today:
Shocker! Female characters are poorly utilized.
I counted four female characters in the film, two of which had barely more than a few lines. The remaining two—Academy-Award nominee Ellen Page and Academy-Award winner Marion Cotillard—are tasked with the thankless job of serving as plot devices or emotional mirrors for Dicaprio’s Dom Cobb (who is written with the emotional depth of a piece of lightly buttered toast). Cotillard’s beauty, maturity and soulful depth (remember, this is the actor who won an Oscar playing Parisian icon Edith Piaf) exist to suggest similar qualities of Cobb. Page’s presence works to make Dicaprio seem older; doing a much better job than Dicaprio’s fuller face (he seems to fill out when a role requires him to appear aged), creative make up and access to an array of what appear to be his grandfather’s suits. Inception requires little of its talented female leads; it is unsurprising the film is tracking poorly with older audiences, particularly women. Expecting nuanced female characters in a Christopher Nolan film is about as fruitful as expecting the same from a Kubrick film. Nolan’s films haven’t managed to position women in thoughtful or empowered ways. In Inception, the women exist to provide the audience with analysis of the male lead, lacking individual motivations for their actions, thoughts, and feelings.I was going to include a still of the two actresses, but I couldn’t find one. Which leads me to…
The Bechdel Movie Test. Have you heard of this? It’s a simple three-part test which must have all of the following criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. The test was popularized by Alison Bechdel‘s comic Dykes To Watch Out For, in a 1985 strip called The Rule.
So, how does Inception fare with The Bechdel Test? According to the Bechdel Test Movie List, it “dubiously” passed. Poster Laurel states:
I know we can’t speak more broadly, but if we could, I would add that this movie, while brilliantly executed, was very dull and conventional as far as plot goes. Male protagonist is held back by weaker female, he’s strong she’s weak, helper female assists him to win free, females only exist as reflections of or part of the Hero’s Story – how often have we seen this? And how much more interesting the film would have been if Ariadne had been the protagonist. But of course we can’t do that, because if a female is the protagonist then the movie has to be about love, children or buying shoes.
What do you think? Are you disappointed with the movie? Are you disappointed with the female characters? I walked away from the film completely enthralled, but I must say that I wouldn’t mind seeing some stronger women in Nolan’s films. Like Catwoman, purrrhaps?

July 17th, 2010On Social Saturdays I write about Social Networking.
OK, Catfans… are you ready for the second story that we’ll be shooting in the Catwoman Summer Project? Remember that the costume we’ll be using is based on the modern black catsuit with goggles?
Over on Facebook you can find the Catwoman #2 winning script: “The Cat and The Lioness” by Gael Mansard. The story involves an exotic location, Talia Al Ghul, and Catwoman tied up in a chair. But if you think you can improve upon the script, give it a shot!
Next Friday I’ll submit the best of all the submitted scripts and tie them into one sexy package. Don’t forget that all contributing writers will be credited. And if you just want to give feedback, we welcome that too. Head on over to the discussion page and let me know what you think would make it the best possible fan film.
Have fun!

July 16th, 2010On Fan Fridays I write about fandom.
Today is Inception Day.
Christopher Nolan, one of my favorite directors has released what Leonardo DiCaprio is calling “his Fellini’s 8 1/2“.
For the uninitiated, Inception revolves (literally) around a skilled thief (DiCaprio) who steals valuable secrets from the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is most vulnerable. Below I’ve embedded three trailers, which are so delicious it makes me even MORE impatient for Batman 3.
In related news, Michael Caine let it slip that Bats 3 production will begin in April 2011, for a July 20, 2012 release. But that won’t stop the Batfans from excited chatter:
Cinematical proposes a quiet viral campaign has begun. Some of the domains may be for the Arkham Asylum 2 videogame, but others may not (I’m looking at you: BatmanSiegeofGotham.com, WarinGothamCity.com, WheresBruceWayne.com, and BatmanGrandDelusion.com).
Other Bat news, if you haven’t heard, that The Joker will not be recast. Nolan has not released any information on which Gotham villains will be in the next film. Catwoman anyone? Meow.
And now… Inception.

Thank you to everyone that has been contributing to my Catwoman Summer Project. I am very happy to announce the winner of the second Catwoman costume below…
The fans asked for it, and they’re getting it! July’s selection will be my interpretation of the modern incarnation of Selina Kyle, as envisioned by the late Michael Turner, Adam Hughes, and not forgetting Darwyn Cooke.
We will shoot a short fan film to accompany the photo shoot and we need YOUR story. You’ll have a little under ONE week to write a short treatment or script for the modern Cats. We had a lot of fantastic submissions last month and I hope to see even more this month.
The rules are as follows:
1. Write a short treatment or short script ONE-TWO pages long.
2. Use ONE or TWO locations.
3. Use Catwoman/Selina Kyle as the main character. You may optionally use a childhood Selina (here’s your chance for an origin story).
4. Keep it low-budget. That means no explosions, special effects, green screen, foreign locations, or other things that would make my producer panic. Try instead to keep it simple and creative. It could be funny. It could be dramatic. It could be surreal. How do you see Catwoman?
5. Keep it Safe For Work! ;-)
6. Post your submission on the Facebook Discussion Page, just title it “Catwoman #2:” followed by the title of your piece.
7. Turn it in before Friday, July 16.
If you participated last month I encourage you to resubmit your scripts, or rewrite them. Also, you can submit as many times as you like!
Once we select the winning story, I’ll open the contest up for a script rewrite, so spend your time writing a strong treatment. It’s all about a unique idea, working within the guidelines.
Many thanks again and good luck!
NOTE: The winning author will be credited on the finished piece, as well as all other creative contributions that we use.
