The World Premiere of “Last Dance”
July 1st, 2010The day has arrived, it’s time for my “Last Dance”. Below is a snippet from the Press Release, but just skip to the end if you want to get dancing!
Think you know Donna Summer’s “Last Dance”? Think again.
Girl In The Red Dress has taken the legendary 1978 track and worked her unique magic on it.
The new “Last Dance” combines an infectious up-tempo beat with the Girl’s trademark dark-edged vocals. Far from a copycat cover version of the Paul Jabara-penned classic, the Girl’s reworking is a passionate but forceful cry from the heart, bittersweet and unforgettable. And very danceable.Produced by Chris G at Studio Chicago, the track was co-engineered by Amber Moelter, the founder of ALM Talkies and creative force behind Girl In The Red Dress.
“Last Dance” is the second release in a series of imaginative cover versions of tracks from iconic female artists, re-recorded by Girl In The Red Dress.
It follows the Girl’s chart-topping version of “Who’s That Girl?”, which turned the Madonna song into a soulful French waltz and spun the track in a new and unexpected direction to great acclaim.
“Last Dance” by Girl In The Red Dress is available in MP3 256kbps format, which will play on iPod® and all MP3 players.
Download it securely through Paypal or with credit card for $0.99.
Don’t waste a minute, because it’s time to DANCE!Thank you to all the fans who have been so supportive of my music. I love to express myself through singing, but you make the party much more fun! I hope you love this track and play it at the end of your next party. Let’s make this Summer hot.
If you’re still not sold, here’s the teaser video to tempt you:

June 9th, 2010On Women’s Wednesday I talk about women in media.
Did you just watch the video above? How far did you get? I forced myself to watch all of it – mostly out of curiousity – but I barely got 15 seconds through. Especially when I saw how long it was. Dear Ms. Gaga, does every video need to attempt to be an epic? My patience is wearing incredibly thin when it comes to your pretentious art and film references – and I’m a filmmaker!
Harsh? Well, I’m not alone. Let’s start with Jezabel: “Gaga’s New Video Makes Riot Gear and Latex Boring” who says:
It’s very beautiful! And very dull. Vivid religious iconography, leather coats, vague military/riot references and men in fishnets and heels can’t make up for a weak (non existent?) narrative and an incredibly repetitive song.
In “So Predictably Disrespectful” The Spectator states:
Being vulgar to shock the middle class is by now simply the last refuge of an empty mind; it’s not shocking at all. We expect disrespect from people like Lady Gaga. After all, we’d only be shocked if she sang something beautiful, inspirational, or possibly with more than ten words in the song.
Even Faith & Reason from USA Today agrees:
I can certainly understand how some people will be offended and I wouldn’t argue with them. And 25 years ago when videos were first doing things like this, it was shocking. But I think it’s just not a particularly compelling — or coherent — or shocking video.
Whether or not you agree, you can have your vote over at The Guardian, who is simply asking of the video – Masterpiece or Overrated? And while you are considering the options, they jog your memory:
-Masterpiece – espiecally the machine gun bra and Leather Nun homage
OR
-Overrated – Madonna’s done it all before, and the song sounds like Ace of Base
What do you think?

Gaga VS. The World
May 3rd, 2010On Music Mondays I write about music.
Since Christina Aguilera’s music video for “Not Myself Tonight” premiered on Thursday, I haven’t been able to stop watching it. But not necessarily for the right reasons. Here it is, critique after the jump.
I have been rooting for Xtina ever since the media has been pitting her against Lady Gaga. I wanted her to hit this out of the ball park. While no one can argue that Gaga is the better singer, it is clear that the artistry in Gaga’s video “Bad Romance” goes leagues beyond this video catalogue for Atsuko Kudo. I’m all about the latex, but this just seems desperate and over the top. It’s like a kinky commercial for Christina’s own perfume.
I want to be clear. I have no problem with sexy, female singers liberating themselves for the world to see. But, personally I find both this video (and most of Gaga’s) to be crass. It is very possible to be sexy and subtle. Maybe not in the world of pop music, it would be too much of a gamble. It seems all the pop tarts of this generation are copying the original bad girl of pop: Madonna. What Would Madonna Do? She would go over-the-top.
Speaking of the Queen of Pop, her influences can be seen in “Not Myself Tonight”. There’s of course “Human Nature”. Which is one of my very favorite M videos.
And the reference that most critics are dropping: “Express Yourself”.
While Gaga’s “Monsters”, as they are called, are making a fuss, none more so than her gossip blogger “hubby” Perez Hilton. Here’s the pictorial comparison he put together. “Bad Romance” vs. “Not Myself Tonight.” (And if you really want to read a cat fight, those comments might be the closest thing you’ll get).
What do you think? It does seem strikingly similar.
In case you want yet another perspective on the whole matter, MTV has put together a pop-culture cheat sheet, including references from George Michael, Michael Jackson, Christina Milian, and even Voldo, a spiky S&M character from the “Soul Caliber” video games.
That might be a bit of a stretch.
What do you think? Do you care? Is Christina ripping off Gaga? Is Gaga ripping off Madonna? And who is Madonna ripping off? Or, is it possible that each girl is genuinely interested in expressing themselves through fetish and S&M? I’m hoping that Xtina will do something more like “Fighter” next time ’round.

May 1st, 2010Here are a few of my favorite posts over the last two months.
March

No matter who your hero is, you will love this video because you can customize it.
It takes awhile to load, but it is worth it!
Martin’s winning Fan Friday artwork won him a special edition latex CD case.
Here’s how made the winning entry.
Early March I put out a poll to see if there was interest in a new Catwoman project. There was.
A huge highlight for me was Tim Hayes’
“10 Things I Learnt Watching the 2010 Oscars While Medicated.”
Here’s a double whammy: the news that Dirty Step Upstage was accepted into the World Music and Independent Film Festival in Washington, D.C. & the online premiere of the beginning of the film.

March 27th I updated my Flickr account with live Girl In The Red Dress performance photos.
And here’s a video of those photos, set to “Dirty Step Upstage”.April
When I got the news that Dirty Step Upstage was accepted into the Cannes Independent Film Festival, I broke down how sales agents work.

In April 1st we put together a fun video for you. I dare you not to laugh.

This post features four character teasers from Dirty Step Upstage.

This side-by-side comparison of “Vogue” from Sue Salvester (from hit show Glee) and Madonna.
A highlight for Madonna fans.
Finally, a three part piece on Photoshop in the media.

April 19th, 2010On ALMT-Music Mondays I write about music.
Last Tuesday the fantastic rendition of Madonna’s Vogue by Sue Salvester (Jane Lynch from Glee) debuted online. Enjoy and compare the videos, side by side.
The quality of the video below is a little iffy – check out the official (unembeddable) video here.
